🌟 Our Top Pick: Kunming Cuihu Lireide Hotel
📍 Best Area: Futian District
⭐ Best Value: Kunming Latuso Hotel
If you are staying in Kunming for few days, I recommend staying near Green Lake Park - by far the most pleasant area of the city.
However if you are only passing through, the most convenient location is in the centre of the city near Kunming Railway Station.
My top hotel recommendation is Kunming Cuihu Lireide Hotel, with excellent rooms and views near the Green Lake.
Picking the right location to stay in Kunming was for us particularly tricky – Kunming is quite wide spread from north to south, and the most pleasant location in the city is actually near the Green Lake Park, a bit further north.
However, trains to Beijing leave from the Kunming South Railway station.
For that reason, we went for a bit of a strange compromise – we decided to stay near the Kunming Railway Station where our train from Lijiang arrived for one night, and then on the second night, we booked a hotel near the Kunming South Railway Station to save ourselves commute time in the morning.
It worked out quite well, and Kunming South is actually located just nearby a student town – which was very cool and has a lot of cheap food options and we found it very interesting to wander there at night.
In this post I will guide you through Kunming's neighbourhoods and its best hotels.
Guide to Kunming's Neighbourhoods
1. Green Lake (Cuihu Park) - Best for First-Time Visitors
Kunming's most picturesque and convenient area, centered around a beautiful park where locals practice tai chi each morning. This central neighbourhood offers easy access to cafes, shopping, and major attractions, with a vibrant atmosphere that captures the city's cultural heart.
- Perfect for: Travelers seeking convenience, families with children, and photographers
- Nearby attractions: Green Lake Park, Yuantong Temple, Bird and Flower Market
- Transport: Well-connected by metro, with major attractions within walking distance
2. Kunming Old Street (Nanping Jie) - Best for Cultural Immersion
Step back in time in Kunming's historical district, featuring well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, traditional tea houses, and artisan shops.
The atmospheric lanes come alive in the evenings when red lanterns illuminate the streets and open-air restaurants serve authentic Yunnan cuisine.
- Perfect for: Culture enthusiasts, foodies, and those seeking authentic experiences
- Nearby attractions: East and West Pagodas, Yunnan Provincial Museum, local markets
- Transport: Less connected to major transit but walkable to central attractions
3. Kunming Railway Station Area - Best for Budget Travelers
The practical transportation hub of Kunming offers the city's most budget-friendly accommodation options and excellent connections to other Yunnan destinations.
While not as scenic as other areas, its convenience for travelers and value for money and convenience make it a sensible choice for many visitors.
- Perfect for: Budget travelers, those arriving by train, and visitors planning day trips
- Nearby attractions: Kunming Railway Museum, East Bus Station, shopping centers
- Transport: Major bus routes, metro access, and easy connections to attractions
4. Dianchi Lake - Best for Relaxation and Nature
Located about 8km from downtown, Dianchi Lake offers a tranquil retreat with modern resort-style hotels overlooking Yunnan's largest lake. The area provides a peaceful alternative to city lodging, with the stunning Western Hills (Xishan) creating a picturesque backdrop.
- Perfect for: Longer stays, relaxation seekers, and families wanting more space
- Nearby attractions: Western Hills, Yunnan Ethnic Village, Haigeng Park
- Transport: Metro line 1,4 and 5 access different parts of the lake, but the commute from there is not very convenient
General tips on picking hotels when traveling
My rule of thumb when traveling, especially in China, is that you should stay relatively central, close to a metro station, walkable to some street food locations.
Trust me, being where things are happening sets your mood up right and saves you precious time you would otherwise spend trying to get places.
Essential China Hotel Booking Tips
Before booking your Chengdu hotel:
- Passport required: All hotels require your passport for registration with local authorities
- Deposits standard: Many hotels require deposit, can be taken off the credit card
- Booking timeline: Reserve 3-4 weeks ahead for peak seasons during summer holiday and major Chinese festivals
- Language considerations: International hotels have English speaking staff ready to help with any question you might have. It is very common to communicate with hotel staff over WeChat using their autotranslate functionality
- Local apps: You can use WeChat/AliPay for smaller amounts, but international cards are widely accepted in hotels
