Where to Stay in Sanya: Best Hotels by Bay (2026 Guide)
Your guide to Sanya‘s bays and best hotels for every budget
Share this post:
Sanya is often called the "Hawaii of China" — and for good reason. Palm trees, tropical beaches, warm weather year-round, and resorts that rival anything you'd find in Southeast Asia.
But here's what nobody tells you before you book: Sanya's beaches are spread across four completely different bays, stretching over 50km. Choose the wrong one, and you might end up with a 45-minute taxi ride just to find dinner. Or worse — like I discovered on my recent trip — you might arrive at your beautiful resort only to find out you can't actually swim in the sea.
I stayed in Haitang Bay, surrounded by stunning mega-resorts and world-class facilities. What I didn't expect? „No swimming“ signs on the beach! I assumed this was just a Sanya thing, but it turned out to be specific to that bay. Meanwhile, tourists in-the-know were happily splashing around in Yalong Bay, just 20 minutes away.
That experience made me realize: where you stay in Sanya matters more than which hotel you pick. So I put together this guide to help you choose the right bay first — then find the perfect hotel within it.

Understanding Sanya‘s 4 Bays
Before you book, you need to understand the lay of the land. Sanya is arranged along the coast from West (Airport) to East.

There are 4 main bays, each with distinct advantages and target visitors.
- Sanya Bay: Closest to the airport. Great sunsets and cheaper hotels, but the water isn't very clear and the beaches are public (can get very crowded).
- Dadonghai Bay: The "City Beach." A mix of resorts and local life. You can walk to malls, foreign bars, and noodle shops.
- Yalong Bay: The "Gold Standard." White sand, calm blue water, and established 5-star resorts. This is the safest bet for a classic beach holiday.
- Haitang Bay: The "New Luxury." Massive resorts and the Duty-Free Mall.

Yalong Bay: Best for Beach Lovers & First Timers
If this is your first time in Sanya and you just want a classic beach vacation where you can actually swim in the ocean, go to Yalong Bay. It is the safest bet for a relaxing holiday.
Why stay here: The water is swimmable (unlike Haitang) and cleaner (unlike Sanya Bay).
My Luxury Pick: Park Hyatt Sanya Sunny Bay Resort is by far the hotel that suits my estethics the most from all hotels I have seen. It is high-standard, classy resort that just blends in with the surroundings. Located just by the beach, with swimming pools and scenic surroundings, with fun activities for the kids, it is by far the nicest hotel I have seen — though quite pricey in the season. But I do recommend it to whoever can afford it!

My Value Pick: Sheraton Sanya Yalong Bay The Sheraton is right next door to the more expensive resorts but offers a fantastic pool complex at a better price point. It’s a bit older, but very well maintained.

Haitang Bay: Best for Privacy, Shopping & Water Parks
Choose Haitang Bay if you want a "resort bubble." You are far from the city center, but the resorts here are massive destinations in themselves.
Why stay here: You want ultra-luxury, you plan to drop cash at the massive CDF Duty-Free Mall, or you are visiting Atlantis.
The "Must-Mention": Atlantis Sanya Even if you don't stay here, you will likely visit the Aquaventure Waterpark. Modelled after its Dubai counterpart, it is a „7 star“ resort and a landmark in Sanya. Its best known feature are underwater rooms. Surprisingly, standard rooms are not that expensive, and if you are into resort holidays and waterpark, it might be just the option for you!
Room prices start at 250$/night, much less expensive than Atlantis Dubai!
Pro Tip: Booking a room here includes unlimited daily access to the Waterpark and the Lost Chambers Aquarium. Tickets for a family of four can cost over $150/day alone, so if you are planning to spend most of your time in waterparks and swimming pool, it is not such a bad deal.

Luxury Pick: The Sanya EDITION. If Atlantis is too loud for you, head to the EDITION. It is sleek, modern, and features a private "ocean" (a massive saltwater lagoon) since you can’t swim in the actual sea at Haitang Bay. This is the spot for the "Rednote" (Xiaohongshu) crowd.

Budget pick: Renaissance Sanya Haitang Bay Resort is quite a good pick for the price — I stayed in this hotel during my Sanya stay, and while I was quite disappointed by the „no swimming“ sign, I did appreciate decent food and swimming pools, as well as a truly stunning beach right at my doorstep.

Dadonghai: Best for Action & Budget
Dadonghai might not be home to the best resorts, but it also doesn‘t force you to stay in a resort. You aren't trapped in a hotel; you can walk out the front door and find spicy noodles, seafood BBQ, and live music. If you came to Sanya to enjoy a bit of sunshine in the winter, but like exploring the surroundings, this might be just the place for you.
Why stay here: You hate paying $50 for a hotel burger and want to eat local.
Top Pick: JW Marriott Dadonghai Bay This property sits on a private edge of the bay, giving you luxury seclusion while being just a 5-minute taxi from the chaotic city center.

Mid-range: Ascott Dadonghai Bay Sanya offers a good value for money with rooms starting at 100$. Ascott brand is beloved in China by families and independent travellers as it offers suites with separate bedrooms and small kitchen.

Budget Option: Barry Boutique Hotel It’s not a 5-star resort, but it’s clean, cheap, and right across the street from the beach. Perfect if you plan to spend all day exploring and don‘t want to spend a fortune.

Sanya Bay: Best for Sunsets, Layovers & Budget
Sanya Bay (San Ya Wan) is the 22km stretch of coastline located immediately to the right of the airport. It is famous for the "Coconut Dream Corridor"—a long, tree-lined avenue that runs along the coast.
Why stay here: It is the closest bay to the airport (10-15 mins). If your flight lands at 1:00 AM or you have an early morning departure, this is the smartest place to book. It is also significantly cheaper than Yalong or Haitang Bay.
The "Real Talk" Trade-off: I need to be honest—the water here is not the crystal clear "Maldives blue" you see in Yalong Bay. Also, unlike the private resorts in Yalong Bay where the hotel connects directly to the sand, in Sanya Bay, you usually have to cross a main road to get from your hotel to the beach.
However, because the bay faces West, the sunsets here are the best in Sanya.
Luxury Pick: Pullman Oceanview Sanya Bay Resort If you want a high-end experience in this area, the Pullman really stands out. It offers a massive pool complex and lush gardens that act as a sound barrier to the main road.

Value Pick: Luoke Platinum Sea View Hotel It is a decent hotel with an infinity pool and stunning sunset views you can watch from your room, close to the beach (you do have to cross the main road though).

Pro Tip: The "Last Night" Hack: If you have a flight leaving at 8:00 AM, don't pay $300 for a night at Atlantis just to sleep for 5 hours. Book your last night at a cheaper hotel in Sanya Bay to save money and be just 10 minutes from the terminal.
Where to Stay in Sanya with Kids
If you're traveling with little ones, your hotel choice becomes even more critical. While my last trip there was actually (for the first time!) without kids, I am very familiar with the challenges parents face when booking holiday in China — and Sanya is no different.
What Parents Really Need to Know
Kids Clubs: Do they speak English? This is the big question, and honestly, the answer is "mostly no." Most Sanya kids clubs operate primarily in Mandarin. . At most properties, expect friendly staff who will entertain your kids with universal languages — art, water, and play — but don't count on English instructions. However, we never found that problematic during our trips.
Breakfast: Will my picky eater survive? Good news here. Most international hotels in Sanya offer solid Western breakfast options: cereals, yogurt, pastries, eggs, and fruit.
Pool vs Beach: Where will they actually swim? Here's the thing I wish I'd known: not all Sanya beaches allow swimming. Haitang Bay has signs prohibiting ocean swimming due to currents — and there will be someone to enforce that restriction. If beach time is important for your kids, Yalong Bay is your safest bet — calm water, gentle slope, lifeguards on duty. However, smaller kids mostly are happy just playing in the sand so for them it doesn‘t matter as much.
Top picks for families
For limitless entertainment: Atlantis Sanya — the waterpark there is insane, and it is included in the price of your stay. If you enjoy big resorts and you don‘t care about swimming in the sea, this is your best option.

For independent explorers: Ascott Dadonghai Bay Sanya is great for families that don‘t plan to spend their days in the hotel. Sure, you have great pool and beach proximity, but you can also eat out and explore the town with ease. Ascott offers suites with separate bedrooms, which is something all parents will appreciate.
We stayed in Ascott branch in Chongqing and we were very happy about the quality of the amenities.

For “Hawaii of China“ experience: Horizon Sanya Yalong Bay Resort & Spa — Yalong Bay is where you experience the best of Sanya, and this hotel is a great pick if you want kids entertainment combined with calm family holiday. And here you and your kids can swim in the sea.

Trip.com vs Booking.com: Trip.com wins for Sanya
Trip.com consistently offers 10-20% lower prices with significantly more inventory. As the English interface of Ctrip (China's largest travel platform), it provides deeper local hotel integration, a critical "Foreigners Accepted" filter, and all-in-one booking for hotels, flights, trains, and attractions.
Booking.com shows fewer properties and lacks foreigner-acceptance filtering. Use Trip.com as your primary platform; cross-check Agoda for occasional deals.
Seasonal pricing patterns
Peak season (October-April) brings 30-100% price increases with excellent weather (22-28°C). Chinese New Year and Golden Week (October 1-7) trigger extreme crowding and pricing—book 2-3 months ahead or avoid entirely.
Best value windows: November (post-Golden Week, perfect weather) and March-April (pre-summer heat, manageable crowds).
Typhoon season (July-September) offers 30-70% discounts but carries storm risks.
Payment preparation checklist
Set up Alipay before arrival—link your Visa or Mastercard through the app. Single transactions up to $5,000 are supported; under ¥200 incurs no fees. Cash remains a good backup (carry ¥500-1,000) however during my last 3 trips I have not used cash at all. International cards work at hotels, large malls, and major attractions but rarely at restaurants or small shops.
