The ideal time to visit Chongqing is during spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when temperatures are pleasant and the dramatic mountain scenery is either blooming with flowers or painted in warm fall colors.

April and October are the sweet spot regarding temperature and weather in general.

Weather Patterns

  • Spring (Mar-May): 15-25°C (59-77°F), with moderate rainfall and increasing humidity.Spring brings a refreshing energy to Chongqing after winter, with parks and mountainsides dotted with colorful blooms. The misty mornings actually enhance the city's mysterious mountain character, creating postcard-worthy scenes of skyscrapers emerging from the clouds.
    • Pros: Comfortable temperatures, beautiful azalea blooms on the mountains, moderate crowd levels, and an authentic atmosphere with fewer foreign tourists.
    • Cons: Increasing humidity as the season progresses, occasional rain showers, and some misty days that might limit long-distance views.
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): 28-40°C (82-104°F), hot and humid with frequent rain.Summer evenings offer relief from the daytime heat, with locals and visitors gathering along the rivers for cool breezes and stunning night views of the illuminated cityscape. Air-conditioned shopping areas and underground walkways become welcome retreats during the hottest hours.
    • Pros: Vibrant outdoor night markets, perfect conditions for river activities, potential for clearer mountain views on non-rainy days, and slightly fewer tourists due to the heat.
    • Cons: Extreme heat and humidity (earning Chongqing its reputation as one of China's "Three Furnaces"), frequent downpours, and uncomfortable conditions for extensive walking tours.
  • Fall (Sep-Nov): 15-28°C (59-82°F), with decreasing rainfall and humidity. This is perhaps the most comfortable season to visit Chongqing, with perfect conditions for outdoor exploration. October, particularly after the National Day holiday crowds disperse, offers the optimal balance of weather and visibility for experiencing the city's dramatic topography.
    • Pros: Most pleasant temperatures of the year, clearest skies for city views, beautiful autumn foliage on surrounding mountains, and ideal conditions for photography.
    • Cons: October National Week crowds at major attractions and higher hotel rates during this holiday period.
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): 6-12°C (43-54°F), relatively dry but often foggy and overcast.Winters are mild compared to northern China but can feel chilly due to high humidity and limited indoor heating. The frequent fog transforms the city's mountain landscapes into ethereal scenes that photographers will appreciate, despite the cooler temperatures.
    • Pros: Lowest tourist numbers, atmospheric fog and mist that creates a moody, cinematic cityscape, best hotel deals of the year, and perfect weather for indoor activities like museums and enjoying the famous Chongqing hotpot.
    • Cons: Chilly and damp conditions that can feel colder than the thermometer suggests, reduced visibility for distant views, fewer outdoor events, and shorter daylight hours.

Festivals & Events

  • Spring Festival/Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb): The city comes alive with lanterns, decorations, and festive activities, though many businesses close for a week. If you visit during this time, the Hongya Cave area and river light shows are particularly spectacular.
  • Dragon Boat Festival (May/June): Witness traditional dragon boat races on the Jialing River, accompanied by festive food and activities throughout the city.
  • Mid-Autumn Festival (Sep/Oct): Families gather to admire the full moon, eat mooncakes, and celebrate with lanterns. Riverside parks and mountain viewpoints become popular spots for evening gatherings.
  • National Day Golden Week (Oct 1-7): While offering impressive patriotic celebrations and light shows, this is also Chongqing's busiest tourist period. Attractions can be extremely crowded, and prices surge. Best avoided unless you specifically want to experience the festivities.

When We Visited

We visited Chongqing in early March with our daughters, and while it was still rather chilly and foggy, we did enjoy our stay. Weather was comfortable for sightseening and the hot pot and other spicy food do a good job of warming you up.

We were in Chongqing during Lantern Festival and while cities might get more crowded during festivals, the experience is quite unique — we certainly haven‘t seen anything similar in Europe, even during Christmas.

During Lantern Festival the city was beautifully lit up in the evening and had big celebrations in different parts of the city.

Family Travel Tip: If traveling with children, spring and fall are particularly recommended. The milder temperatures make exploring comfortable, while still allowing for enjoyable river cruises and outdoor activities. In April you have the best chance to balance of good weather and manageable crowds, and limiting the annoyance of wearing warmer clothes.
