Quick Summary

💰 Luxury Budget: $150+ per night
👍 Mid-Range: $50–$150 per night
🏠 Budget: Under $50 per night
🌟 Our Top Pick: Four Seasons Guangzhou
📍 Best Area: Tianhe (Canton Tower area)
Best Value: Atour Hotel
👨‍👩‍👧 Family Pick: Ascott IFC Guangzhou
🏛️ Best for Culture: Yuexiu Hotel, Curio by Hilton

The best area to stay in Guangzhou for most visitors is Tianhe district, near Canton Tower 广州塔 and Huacheng Square 花城广场. It's modern, well-connected by metro, and walkable to Guangzhou's most impressive skyline views and cultural landmarks.

For culture lovers and foodies, Liwan district (Shamian Island / Xiguan area) offers old-world Cantonese charm at lower prices. For families visiting Chimelong theme parks, staying in Panyu near the resort saves hours of commuting.

Mid-range hotels in Guangzhou run $50–150 per night, with excellent quality compared to Western cities. Our personal favourite is the Four Seasons Guangzhou — we paid just 170 CHF for a room with jaw-dropping Canton Tower views. But read on for the full neighbourhood breakdown and picks at every budget.

Guangzhou 广州 is a city that surprises. With 19 million people, incredible Cantonese food, and a fascinating mix of old and new, it's one of China's most rewarding destinations — yet most tourists skip it entirely.

The city is huge and spread across 11 districts, so where you stay genuinely matters. This guide covers the four best areas with tested hotel recommendations.

Before booking, check our complete guide to planning your China itinerary to see how Guangzhou fits in. For general tips, see our guide to booking hotels in China.

Best Areas to Stay in Guangzhou

Area Best For Price Range Metro Access
Tianhe (Canton Tower) First-timers, modern comfort, families $70–$300/night Lines 1, 3, 5, APM
Yuexiu Sightseeing, budget travellers $30–$120/night Lines 1, 2, 5
Liwan (Xiguan) Culture lovers, foodies $40–$200/night Lines 1, 6, 8
Panyu (Chimelong) Families doing theme parks $100–$300/night Line 3

Our pick: Tianhe for most visitors. Liwan for repeat visitors and foodies.

1. Tianhe 天河 / Canton Tower Area — Best for Most Visitors (Our Pick)

Why Stay in Tianhe

This is where we stay every time. The Zhujiang New Town 珠江新城 area within Tianhe is Guangzhou's modern CBD — but unlike most CBDs, it's genuinely enjoyable for tourists.

Tianhe works well because:

  • Huacheng Square 花城广场 is a huge pedestrian zone surrounded by striking architecture
  • Canton Tower is just across the Pearl River — gorgeous evening walk along the promenade
  • Best metro connections in the city (Lines 1, 3, 5, APM)
  • Premium shopping (Taikoo Hui 太古汇, Parc Central 天环)
  • Guangzhou East Railway Station for direct trains to Hong Kong
  • English more widely spoken here than elsewhere in Guangzhou

👉 Best for: first-time visitors, families, business travellers, anyone who wants modern comfort with easy transport.

The honest downside: Most expensive area. Feels international rather than distinctly Cantonese. If you want old Guangzhou character, look at Liwan instead.

🌟 Our Hotel Picks in Tianhe

Four Seasons Guangzhou 广州四季酒店
Four Seasons Guangzhou 广州四季酒店

💎 Luxury: Four Seasons Guangzhou 广州四季酒店

This is where we stayed, and it might be the best value luxury hotel we've found in China. The Four Seasons occupies the top floors (74th–98th) of the Guangzhou IFC, with floor-to-ceiling windows and direct Canton Tower views.

Quick Facts:

  • Price Range: From ~$190/night (we paid 170 CHF with a free upgrade)
  • Area: Zhujiang New Town CBD
  • Metro: Zhujiang New Town Station

What We Love:

  • Lobby on the 70th floor — cloud-level infinity pool
  • Canton Tower views from the bathtub
  • Michelin-starred Yu Yue Heen for Cantonese cuisine
  • Staff were incredible with our kids (they gave the girls roses at check-in)
  • Huacheng Square literally at the foot of the building
  • Cocktails from the bar on 99th floor can be delivered directly to your room – ideal for parents who otherwise cannot go out

Room Tip: Request a Canton Tower-view room. Prices vary wildly — catch deals under $200, but peak season pushes higher. Still much cheaper than Four Seasons Shanghai or Hong Kong.

👨‍👩‍👧 Best for families: Ascott IFC Guangzhou 雅诗阁服务公寓

Ascott IFC Guangzhou 雅诗阁服务公寓
Ascott IFC Guangzhou 雅诗阁服务公寓
Ascott IFC Guangzhou 雅诗阁服务公寓
Ascott IFC Guangzhou 雅诗阁服务公寓

If you're traveling with kids and need actual living space, the Ascott is the answer. Proper serviced apartments (studios to three-bedrooms) inside the same IFC complex as the Four Seasons.

Quick Facts:

  • Price Range: From ~$120/night
  • Area: Zhujiang New Town CBD (same building as Four Seasons)
  • Metro: Zhujiang New Town Station

What We Love:

  • Full kitchen, washer-dryer, separate bedrooms
  • Indoor playroom with ball pit — younger kids love it
  • Outdoor play area and indoor heated pool
  • Staff speaks decent English, used to hosting families
  • 5-minute walk to Huacheng Square and Canton Tower

Good to know: Bathrooms are a bit dated, but the space and family amenities more than make up for it.

💰 Budget: Atour Hotel 亚朵酒店

Atour Hotel 亚朵酒店
Atour Hotel 亚朵酒店

Atour is one of China's best domestic hotel chains. Clean, modern design, free minibar, decent breakfast, and a reading lounge in the lobby. Rooms from ~$70/night in the Zhujiang New Town area.

What We Love:

  • Consistently clean and well-designed rooms
  • Free minibar and self-service laundry
  • Several locations around Tianhe — all reliable
  • Canton Tower location without the Canton Tower price tag

2. Yuexiu 越秀 — Best for Sightseeing & Budget Travellers

Why Stay in Yuexiu

Yuexiu is the historic heart of Guangzhou. Most cultural landmarks are concentrated here, and it's the most walkable district for sightseeing.

Yuexiu works well because:

  • Walking distance to Yuexiu Park 越秀公园, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall 中山纪念堂, Temple of the Six Banyan Trees 六榕寺
  • Beijing Road 北京路 — the main pedestrian shopping and dining strip
  • Hotels generally cheaper than Tianhe
  • More authentically Cantonese food scene — dim sum, tea houses
  • Metro Lines 1, 2, and 5

👉 Best for: budget travellers, sightseeing-focused trips, solo travellers.

The honest downside: Can feel older and more chaotic. Some hotels are aging. Avoid the area around Guangzhou Railway Station 广州火车站 (noisy, not pleasant).

🌟 Our Hotel Picks in Yuexiu

💎 Top pick: DoubleTree by Hilton Guangzhou

Quick Facts:

  • Price Range: From ~$85/night
  • Area: Next to Yuexiu Park
  • Metro: Xiaobei Station (14 min walk)

What We Love:

  • Beautifully redesigned with Lingnan cultural touches — Canton porcelain, embroidery, lacquer art
  • Rooftop pool overlooking Yuexiu Park
  • Full gym with boxing room, yoga studio
  • Kids' club available
  • 5-minute drive to Beijing Road
  • Staff consistently praised as warm and helpful

👍 Mid-range: Guangzhou Beijing Road Pedestrian Street Zhonghua Plaza Gerui Residence

Right on Beijing Road Pedestrian Street. Apartment-style rooms, practical and no-fuss. Unbeatable location for Yuexiu sightseeing on a mid-range budget.

💰 Budget: CityNote Light 城市便捷酒店 (Beijing Road)

CityNote Light 城市便捷酒店 (Beijing Road)

Clean, modern budget chain near the Museum of the Nanyue King 南越王墓博物馆. Basic but well-maintained. Good for solo travellers who plan to be out exploring most of the day.

3. Liwan 荔湾 / Xiguan 西关 — Best for Culture Lovers & Foodies

Why Stay in Liwan

Old-world Cantonese Guangzhou. If you want the city that existed before the skyscrapers, this is your district.

Liwan works well because:

  • Shamian Island 沙面岛 — European-style boulevards, peaceful tree-lined walks
  • Chen Clan Ancestral Hall 陈家祠 — one of southern China's most beautiful traditional buildings
  • Liwan Lake Park 荔湾湖公园 and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street 上下九步行街
  • Yongqing Fang 永庆坊 — heritage quarter with trendy cafes, very photogenic
  • Best street food in the city — wonton noodles, congee, morning dim sum in old tea houses
  • Metro Lines 1, 6, 8 plus Guangzhou-Foshan intercity line for day trips

👉 Best for: culture lovers, foodies, repeat visitors, photographers.

The honest downside: Fewer international hotel chains. Further from the modern CBD and Canton Tower. Less polished — which is part of the charm, but not for everyone.

🌟 Our Hotel Picks in Liwan

💎 Luxury: White Swan Hotel 白天鹅宾馆 (Shamian Island)

A Guangzhou legend. Opened in 1983, it was China's first five-star hotel and has hosted Queen Elizabeth II and Richard Nixon. Sits right on the Pearl River on Shamian Island.

Quick Facts:

  • Price Range: From ~$150/night
  • Area: Shamian Island
  • Metro: Huangsha Station (Lines 1 & 6), walkable

What We Love:

  • Iconic lobby with cascading indoor waterfall over Lingnan rockery
  • 520 rooms in modern Lingnan style with river or island views
  • Heated outdoor pool, full spa
  • Michelin-recognised Jade River restaurant — outstanding Cantonese food
  • Step outside and you're on Shamian Island's colonial tree-lined streets

👍 Mid-range: IntercityHotel Guangzhou Liwan

Hidden gem. Opened in 2025, brand new, German-brand hotel with a 9.7/10 rating on Trip.com from nearly 800 reviews.

Quick Facts:

  • Price Range: From ~$50/night
  • Area: Liwan district
  • Metro: ~10 minute walk

What We Love:

  • Free daily beer and soft drinks (yes, really — daily refills)
  • 109 modern, immaculately clean rooms
  • Free parking and gym
  • Exceptional value — new international-brand hotel for ~$50/night

4. Panyu 番禺 / Chimelong Resort — Best for Families Visiting Chimelong

Why Stay in Panyu

If Chimelong is on your itinerary — and for families, it should be — spend 1–2 nights near the resort rather than commuting from central Guangzhou.

Chimelong Tourist Resort 长隆旅游度假区 includes:

  • World-class safari park
  • International circus (see our Chimelong Circus review)
  • Water park and amusement park
  • Three on-site hotels (Chimelong Hotel, Panda Hotel, Xiangjiang Hotel)

The Chimelong Hotel is the main 5-star option — safari-themed with a restaurant surrounded by tropical gardens and white tigers. The Panda Hotel has panda-themed rooms that kids go wild for. The Xiangjiang Hotel is right at the Safari Park gates — 3-minute walk.

Multi-park bundles with hotel stays offer good value, especially for 2+ park days.

Getting there: Hanxi Changlong metro (Line 3) connects to central Guangzhou in ~35 minutes. Guangzhou South Railway Station 广州南站 (high-speed rail from Hong Kong/Shenzhen) is just a few km away.

The honest downside: Isolated from "real" Guangzhou. No neighbourhood exploring. Best as a 1–2 night add-on, not your full-trip base. Pricey during school holidays.

Family Review 2025

Tips for Booking Hotels in Guangzhou

  • Passport required: All hotels in China need your passport at check-in.
  • Avoid Golden Week: Prices spike during National Day (Oct 1–7) and Chinese New Year. Book far in advance.
  • Summer heat: May–October is extremely hot and humid (35°C+). Good air conditioning is non-negotiable.
  • Best time to visit: November to February for pleasant weather. See our Guangzhou travel guide.
  • Metro proximity: Stay within 10 minutes of a metro station. Guangzhou is sprawling.
  • Payments: International cards accepted at hotels. For everything else, set up AliPay or WeChat Pay.
  • Language: English limited outside international hotels. A translation app helps enormously.

FAQs

Q: What is the best area to stay in Guangzhou for tourists?
A: Tianhe district, specifically near Canton Tower and Huacheng Square. Best metro connections, modern landmarks within walking distance, diverse dining, hotels at every price point. For culture lovers and foodies, Liwan (Shamian Island area) is an excellent alternative with more traditional character.

Q: Is Guangzhou safe for tourists?
A: Very safe, including for solo travellers and families. Violent crime is extremely rare. Standard big-city advice applies — watch for pickpockets in crowded areas like Beijing Road and Shangxiajiu.

Q: How many days do you need in Guangzhou?
A: 2–3 days for the main highlights. Add 1–2 days if visiting Chimelong theme parks with kids. Works well as a base for day trips to Foshan or as a stopover between Hong Kong/Shenzhen and other Chinese cities.

Q: Which Guangzhou train station should I stay near?
A: If arriving by high-speed rail from Hong Kong or Shenzhen, you'll arrive at Guangzhou South Station 广州南站 (Panyu — not central, but connected by metro Line 2). Guangzhou East Station 广州东站 in Tianhe is more central with direct Hong Kong trains. Avoid staying near the old Guangzhou Railway Station 广州火车站 — not a pleasant area.

Q: Can I combine Guangzhou with Shenzhen and Hong Kong?
A: Absolutely — one of China's best multi-city combos. Shenzhen is 40–60 minutes by high-speed train, Hong Kong about an hour. See our Shenzhen hotel guide.
