If you are staying in Kunming for few days, I recommend staying near Green Lake Park - by far the most pleasant area of the city.However if you are only passing through, the most convenient location is in the centre of the city near Kunming Railway Station. My top hotel recommendation is Kunming Cuihu Lireide Hotel, with excellent rooms and views near the Green Lake.

Picking the right location to stay in Kunming was for us particularly tricky – Kunming is quite wide spread from north to south, and the most pleasant location in the city is actually near the Green Lake Park, a bit further north.

However, trains to Beijing leave from the Kunming South Railway station.

For that reason, we went for a bit of a strange compromise – we decided to stay near the Kunming Railway Station where our train from Lijiang arrived for one night, and then on the second night, we booked a hotel near the Kunming South Railway Station to save ourselves commute time in the morning.

It worked out quite well, and Kunming South is actually located just nearby a student town – which was very cool and has a lot of cheap food options and we found it very interesting to wander there at night.

My rule of thumb when traveling, especially in China, is that you should stay relatively central, close to a metro station, walkable to some street food locations.
