Wulingyuan vs the city, plus the best hotels for the Avatar Mountains, Tianmen Mountain and families — top picks from a family that visited more than once.

Quick Summary
🏨 Top pick: Zhangjiajie Qishi Li Cave Homestay (National Forest Park Flagship Store)
📍 Best area for first-timers: Wulingyuan (right by the Forest Park)
🌆 Best for Tianmen + transport: Zhangjiajie City
💰 Budget: from $25
👍 Mid: from $50
💎 Luxury: from $100
👨👩👧 Best for families: Zhangjiajie Expert Village Yangguang Hotel
TL;DR — my quick recommendation
Base in Wulingyuan for the Forest Park — it's right by the East Gate and far more scenic — then move to Zhangjiajie City for a night or two for Tianmen Mountain and your way out of the region. If you are looking a resort with views that is still very close to the park gate, I recommend checking out Qishi Li Cave Homestay in Wulingyuan: modern, a 10-minute walk from the gate.
The name trap: City vs Forest Park vs Wulingyuan
The most confusing part about finding accommodation near Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is understanding that Zhangjiajie is actually not the closest place to the park you can stay in.
The high-speed train will take you to the Zhangjiajie city, but this is actually around 45 minutes away from the park entrance, and getting there requires taking a bus or a taxi. Zhangjiajie is convenient location for visiting the Tianmen Mountain.
The closest area to the park where you can stay near the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is Wulingyuan. It is in walking distance from the park East Gate. It is also a convenient location if you want to visit the Grand Canyon/Glass Bridge.
Quick comparison table
| Area | Best for | Our top pick | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan | First-timers & the Forest Park | Qishi Li Cave Homestay | $$$ | Check prices → |
| Zhangjiajie City | Tianmen, Fox Fairy & transport | WuYun Mountain View (or Atour for value) | $$–$$$ | Check prices → |
| West Gate (Yangjiajie) | A quiet scenic escape | No. 5 Valley | $$$ | Check prices → |
How to choose your base
I suspect that most people if they decide to come to the area, they would stay there longer and explore nearby attractions. In that case, the best option is to actually to split your stay: on the days of park exploration stay in Wulingyuan, and on the remaining days — including your arrival or departure day — stay in Zhangjiajie City.
It is worth noting that Wulingyuan is more scenic and has better accommodation options.
I would plan it the following:
Arrive in Zhangjiajie → travel to Wulingyuan and overnight → explore the area over 2-3 days → travel back to Zhangjiajie → explore the Tianmen Mountain/brocade museum/performances over 1-2 days → travel to ancient villages or continue the journey out of the region.
If you intend to visit the park over multiple days and also explore the Grand Canyon, you should definitely give Wulingyuan the bulk of your nights — it's the closest base to both the East Gate and the Glass Bridge.
Quick version:
- Here for the Avatar mountains? → Stay in Wulingyuan.
- Mainly want Tianmen Mountain, or arriving late / leaving early? → Stay in Zhangjiajie City.
- Have 3–4 days for both? → Split it: Wulingyuan first, then a night or two in the city.
Wulingyuan — best for the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Wulingyuan is the small town right outside the park's East Gate — close enough to be first through the gate in the morning, with night markets, restaurants and the Charming Xiangxi show on the doorstep. This is where I'd spend most of a Zhangjiajie trip. These are the places I'd book, chosen on location, what families actually need, and what Chinese guest reviews (Ctrip/Trip.com) consistently flag.
⭐ Top pick: Zhangjiajie Qishi Li Cave Homestay — design-led, steps from the gate

A "cave-design" opened in 2025, about a 10-minute walk from the East Gate — so you can be among the first into the park each morning. It is honestly very hard to find hotels with modern design and boutique feel in near the park entrance, so this one really stands out.
Price: $$$ · ~10-min walk to the East Gate
Best value: Atour Hotel (National Forest Park Entrance)

Atour is a reliable, Chinese business brand, and this branch sits about 5–10 minutes' walk from the East Gate, right by the night market, supermarkets and the Charming Xiangxi theatre. No pool, but comfortable stay in reasonable price.
Price: $$ · ~5–10-min walk to the East Gate
Best for families with a pool: Howard Johnson Neodalle Resort

The most resort-like option in Wulingyuan, and the one to book if the kids need a pool. It has indoor and outdoor heated pools, a children's pool, an outdoor and an indoor play area, plus spacious mountain-view rooms.
Price: $$–$$$ · ~15-20-min walk to East Gate
👉 Our top pick books out early — if your dates are fixed, lock in Qishi Li Cave Homestay sooner rather than later.
Zhangjiajie City — best for Tianmen Mountain & transport
Base here for your Tianmen Mountain day, the Fox Fairy show and the 72 Strange Buildings night spectacle — or simply for the night you arrive late or leave early, since the high-speed station and airport are both close. Hotels here are a notch behind Wulingyuan's at the same star level and there can be some aircraft noise, but the location wins for transport and Tianmen.
Best views (a treat): WuYun Mountain View Designer Hotel

A small 5-star designer homestay close to the Tianmen Mountain, with the best mountain views of any city option. Honest caveat: it's secluded (you won't walk to restaurants) but if you are in town mostly for the mountain and the show, it is actually not an issue..
Price: $$$ · ~2.7 km from Tianmen Mountain
Modern & near the station: Sheba Wangyue Boutique Resort (72 Strange Buildings)

A modern boutique resort beside the 72 Strange Buildings — the city's big after-dark attraction, with light shows and Tujia performances — and close to Zhangjiajie West high-speed station. A smart pick if you're arriving or leaving by train and want to catch the 72 Towers at night without a long transfer. Newer and more stylish than most city-centre options.
Price: $$ · by the 72 Strange Buildings & West station
Best for the cable car (value): Atour Hotel (Tianmenshan Cableway Station)

The same dependable Atour comfort, this time right in town near the Tianmen Mountain cable-car station and ticket office — ideal if you want to be first up Tianmen in the morning. Compact and well-priced, with family rooms available and the airport just minutes away. A practical, fuss-free base for your Tianmen day or a late arrival.
Price: $$ · near the Tianmen cable-car station
Other options — West Gate / Yangjiajie
For quiet scenic resorts you can pick staying near West Gate. The West Gate (Yangjiajie) side is the calm, scenic alternative — valley settings, fewer crowds, and resort-style homestays built for slowing down. It's further from the train (around an hour's transfer), so it suits a longer, unhurried trip rather than a quick in-and-out. These three are the standouts:
No. 5 Valley Lodge (五号山谷)

The best-known international-friendly retreat on this side — an infinity pool with mountain views, spacious clean rooms, tea ceremonies, and varied home-cooked breakfasts and dinners. About 2 km from the park, with staff who happily organise your park visits. A true switch-off-from-the-city stay.
Price: $$$ · ~2 km from the West Gate
Poetic Tangwan Mountain Retreat

A peaceful valley homestay right by the Yangjiajie (West Gate) scenic area, ringed by Zhangjiajie's red quartz-sandstone peaks, with a pool and a free shuttle to the park gate. Sunsets on clear days, drifting cloud on rainy ones — the kind of place you book to watch the mountains, not to rush.
Price: $$ · West Gate / Yangjiajie
Forest Homestay at Sunrise

A small, scenic forest stay near the Yangjiajie cable car with a pool and sunrise mountain views — a relaxed, photogenic base on the quiet side of the park.
Price: $$ · ~2.8 km from the Yangjiajie cable car
Can you stay inside the park?
No, while it was possible in the past, to protect the nature this is no longer an option. However, there are plenty of scenic and quiet resorts around the park if this is what you are looking for.
Where NOT to stay / common mistakes
The most common mistake is to confuse the locations and book Zhangjiajie city when you plan to spend most of the time exploring Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Grand Canyon.
Two more to avoid: if you're a light sleeper, think twice about a hotel right by the airport in the city — aircraft noise can carry. And don't assume the hotels immediately at the park gate are automatically the best; a short taxi ride out often gets you better rooms and views for the same money.
Tips for booking hotels in Zhangjiajie
Zhangjiajie is very popular both among local Chinese tourists, as well as foreign travellers, so book in advance. Especially small boutique hotels with limited availability need to be booked in advance.
Avoid peak Chinese travel periods – we came in September and the queues for buses were quite long already (luckily some of them allowed us priority queue because of the kids).
Prices and availability swing hardest around Golden Week (1–7 October) and Chinese New Year — if you must travel then, book several months ahead; for spring and autumn, 4–6 weeks out is usually fine.
Keep a screenshot of each hotel's Chinese name and address on your phone — English hotel names often don't match what a taxi driver recognises.
FAQs
What is the best area to stay in Zhangjiajie?
Stay in Wulingyuan for most of your trip — it's a 5–10 minute walk from the Forest Park's East Gate and the most scenic base — then add a night in Zhangjiajie City for Tianmen Mountain and your departure. Our top pick in Wulingyuan is Qishi Li Cave Homestay; for families, Expert Village Yangguang or the pool-equipped Howard Johnson.
Should I stay in Wulingyuan or Zhangjiajie City?
Wulingyuan is closest to the Avatar mountains, Glass Bridge and Grand Canyon and is more scenic. Zhangjiajie City is best for Tianmen Mountain, the Fox Fairy show, the 72 Strange Buildings, and arriving or leaving by train or plane. Many people split their stay: Wulingyuan first, then a night in the city.
Can you stay inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
No — guesthouses inside the park were closed to protect the environment. The closest you can stay is Wulingyuan, a 5–10 minute walk from the East Gate.
How many nights do you need in Zhangjiajie?
Plan at least 3–4 nights: 2–3 in Wulingyuan for the Forest Park, plus 1–2 in the city for Tianmen Mountain and the standalone sights. See our Zhangjiajie itinerary for how to sequence it.
Are Zhangjiajie hotels good for families?
Yes. For a pool, book Howard Johnson; for a calm courtyard with spacious family rooms, Expert Village Yangguang. One thing to check: several Zhangjiajie properties can't add cribs or extra beds, so confirm before booking. More in our Zhangjiajie with kids guide.
Do hotels have English-speaking staff?
The pricier boutique stays (Qishi Li, WuYun, No. 5 Valley) have English-speaking staff who help plan and book your park days. At budget inns, have a translation app ready, and keep a screenshot of your hotel's Chinese name for taxi drivers.

Final thoughts
The Zhangjiajie area is genuinely beautiful but I cannot stress enough that it is a very touristy place. So if you want to enjoy the scenery without the crowds, if you have money for it, it is best to find a beautiful resort and enjoy the views at sunset in the privacy of your hotel.
